Why I want Auden Tate to gain 22 lbs

It is certainly too late to start now but as the title suggests I want Auden Tate to gain some muscle weight in the offseason. Why you might ask? I think Auden Tate could be our next big name pass catching tight end. Before you click the back button or immediately head to your favorite adult site hear me out. In my previous article I said that there were enough balls to go around and that the addition of Tee Higgins didn’t inhibit the ability to get everyone catches. What if we could double down and increase catches for Tate, get more playing time for Higgins and fill the pass catching gap that Tyler Eifert left at the position?

Tate is a big guy at 6’5″ and plays even bigger with his ability to go up and get balls. His mastery in the air and acrobatic catches have been compared to AJ Green. He runs good routes and came on strong last season. I want this guy on the field and I want him being a threat. We all know that Uzomah is not our answer at TE. Drew Sample hasn’t shown more than a run blocker. Eifert wasn’t known as a great run blocker but was serviceable. I know what you are saying, you can’t just tell a guy to change positions, gain some weight and learn how to block. He is 23 years old, sure I can!

Here is a body breakdown of some notable TE’s:

HeightWeightName
6’6″255Tyer Eifert
6’6″260CJ Uzomah
6’4″258Drew Sample
6’5″250Zach Ertz
6’5″250Travis Kelce
6’4″250George Kittle
6’5″228Auden Tate

Is this completely realistic, I don’t know. I know that it would increase snaps, get Green-Higgins-Boyd and Tate on the field at the same time consistently on passing downs. We are wasting snaps having Uzomah in as a pass catcher that are matching up on linebackers. If we can get Tate with a linebacker I would take that matchup any day. It’s what we had with Eifert only with more speed and less concussions (too soon?). If he could be a red zone threat too like Eifert that could really help Burrow early. Just a thought.
